They're Applying to America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and rising, and presently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – really, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.

We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the world' into 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into an icon of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this has happened more gradually, over decades rather than months, however it is still unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Savior that I grew up with, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably not the narrative of a powerful ruler arising; rather, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape secret police. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for other people, especially for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to present the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever someone steals your coat you ought to provide the person your additional clothing as well.

The obvious and direct truth that the Savior from scripture advocates for a form of radical love concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a controversial faith: engaging for the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Best Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to witness the persistent defiance against Trump arise in this past year. It has served as great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated voters to turn out in numbers during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners at every demonstration and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you receive him and receive them or reject?

The nation is most protected, in other words, by relationship to the finest about American history, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to elements that cause it to be special and beautiful, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the most damaging about the nation and Christianity did not happen; it represents both meekness and belief, a combination that serious US believers should embrace.
