Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
