EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
